What are the advantages and disadvantages of autologous bone grafting?

Autologous bone, in contrast to homologous or heterologous bone, does not stimulate the immune response as it is recognised by our system as being part of it and so has a better chance of not being rejected.

Another advantage is that it has osteoconductive and osteoinductive properties as well as mechanical support (if you are using the cortical bone). The primary disadvantage is pain at the donor site as well as possible complications (infection, iatrogenic fractures, etc.).
