What are megaprostheses?

Megaprostheses were initially created for the treatment of severe oncological pathologies that affect the bone in which, for reasons related to the extension of the underlying disease, a radical intervention and a large areas resection of bone tissue are requested.

This factor forces the surgeon to use implants to replace parts of resected bone in addition to the articular components.

Indications for implanting these prostheses is broadening recently to include treatment of non-oncological diseases in those cases in which there is severe bone loss, whether due to traumatic events (non-unions) or periprosthetic loss with consequent mobilization of the implants even in septic complications.
