What are growth factors?

Growth factors are biological substances present in the body that have various functions. The primary one is to stimulate the proliferation of mesenchymal cells, and direct the differentiation towards a cell line capable of regenerating a specific tissue (in Orthopaedics and Traumatology growth factors are used that direct the cells towards the line producing bone, cartilage or muscle).

These growth factors may be autologous, obtained from the same patient by peripheral blood centrifugation thus obtaining the PRP (platelet rich plasma), or synthetic, such as the rh-BMPs (among these, the most used and the most active on bone are BMP-7 and BMP-2) obtained through genetic engineering.
