An important agreement was signed between the Gaetano Pini Orthopaedic Institute in Milan and the National Association for Osteoarticular Infections (ANIO) to improve assistance to patients affected by septic complications.

It expands the possibility of specialised treatments, institutes an easy and preferential path and offers a reference centre for those affected by bone and limb complications (about 4-5% of individuals who have underdone orthopaedic surgery).

Here are some goals of the new agreement between the Reparative Orthopaedic Surgery (COR) department at the G.Pini Orthopaedic Institute and the National Association for Osteoarticular Infections. The G. Pini Institute, coordinated by Giorgio Maria Calori, has always paid special attention, with specific expertise and recognised experience, to the care and prevention of the onset of complications in skeletal muscular tissue. In Italy, there are approximately 28 thousand new cases of infection each year.

"My department," explains Giorgio Maria Calori, Director of the Reparative Orthopaedic Surgery Division (COR) at the Gaetano Pini Orthopaedic Institute in Milan, "is specific not only for studying and clinical application of new biotechnologies and tissue engineering, but also for using special prosthesis implants to optimise the healing of complications. In addition, it includes the treatment of bone necrosis, consolidative fracture healing delays, non-unions and especially of critical defects with extensive bone loss, both septic and aseptic."
Through this agreement, joint actions will also be launched aimed at increasing the protection of patients with orthopaedic complications and also to activate specific care and preferred social pathways (civil disability, preferential path for the injured at work, social support, logistics and information on the disease) for patients with these complications in order to allow quick initiation of treatment for patients with chronic or acute osteoarticular infections.

Now available through the Reparative Orthopaedic Surgery Department (COR), a highly specialised structure that is recognised nationally and internationally as a reference centre for the treatment and prevention of the onset of complications that affect skeletal muscle tissue."
